Dearest Daughters,
As you're well aware, health is a Numero Uno priority around here--both mental and physical health.
It didn't use to be--for me, at least. I pushed through colds and flus. I didn't listen to my body. And that's one of the reasons I ended up having a severe breakdown or "life crisis" back in April.
It was only then, when my life halted before me, that I stopped to re-assess;. I was forced to put on my own oxygen mask, to take care of myself and to focus on healing. And in doing so, modeling for my Dearest Daughters the importance of both mental and physical self-care--in particular, preventative care.
I've proactively taught you girls a little bit of Mommy-and-Me yoga. Before bed, I read you a short guided imagery or we pray a metta, or loving-kindness, meditative prayer: may we be safe, may we be healthy, may we be happy, may we have peace of mind.
We know that mind and body are truly and thoroughly connected. And these little things help us all to settle down for a good night's sleep.
For addittional bed time tips, Blue Shield of Claifornia offers Dr. Jim and Bob's Fun & Helpful Health Advice. They have a short video with ideas for calming oneself before bed or making other lifestyle changes in order to sleep better and prevent insomnia without using any medication.
Dr. Jim and Bob's mixture of humor and advice is not limited to insomnia. Make sure to "Like" Blue Shield of California on Facebook and get your dose of laughter and knowledge from Dr. Jim and Bob on anything from constipation to hiccups!
Blue Shield of California is a not for profit company. They offer easy access to alternative care, like chiropractors and acupuncture, as well as easy access to great doctors and a wide range of affordable health plans.
Having been diagnosed with Bipolar DIsorder I, I do not take for granted my own health care plan. I am able to access both psychiatric and theraputic services, approaching my mental health from all directions, while I continue practicing less traditional methods and lifestyle changes, like meditation, yoga, mindfulness or clean eating.
Whether you view your health holistically or not, we can all certainly benefit from a team of practicioners and variety of approaches to maintaining or reaching our health goals--from your Primary Care Physcician to your Zumba instructor to Dr. Jim and Bob--the more the merrier, right!?
Especially in light of the new year, here's to our continued health, DDs and Dearest Readers, alike!
Love,
Mommy
